alifornia based YouTube; the massively popular video file sharing site with local versions in 22 different countries around the globe has just announced in a blog post that it is doubling the size limit for video uploads.
Users who want to upload videos now will find that the file limit size has been increased from one gigabyte to two gigabytes which will enable registered users to post longer and higher definition videos.
It seems that YouTube has responded to the demands of their customers, many of whom have been asking for an increase in the file upload size. So what does it mean for users?
“The increase means you can upload longer videos at a higher resolution as well as large HD files directly from your camera,” YouTube said.
“The changes allow you to share links directly to the HD version of your video, as well as embed the HD version on your blog or website,” it says on the blog, and goes on to give detailed instructions on how to do it.
As technology advances so does the capabilities of the devices used so it makes sense to keep up with the times and increase the file size if they want their users to continue to enjoy the site.
It was only last September that YouTube increased the file size from a measly 100MB to 1GB and now less than a year later they have doubled it, a move that will please the increasing number of people enjoying High Definition video.
High Definition video means higher file sizes but even if the file size limit is increased, the actual time length of each individual video uploaded remains the same at maximum of ten minutes.
YouTube was founded back in 2005 by three former PayPal employees, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim who received venture capital funding from Sequoia Capital to launch the video file sharing site.
YouTube was bought a year later by the Internet search and advertising giant Google Inc for a massive $1.65 billion.
Anyone can watch videos on YouTube but if you want to upload videos you have to register. Although most of the content is uploaded by individuals, television stations, companies and organisations have all jumped on the YouTube bandwagon to make their content available to YouTube viewers.
In January this year, the number of unique viewers watching videos on YouTube exceeded 100 million. Now that’s a lot of bums on seats and potentially offers a huge amount of exposure.
