Wireless USB Gets New Lease of Life

It seems that wireless USB is making something of an impression as of late, and all those who said that it had had its day as we await the arrival of the integration of wireless connectivity into more devices may have been just a little bit premature in their judgment.

This news comes as it has just been unveiled that the Italian company Olidata has released a wireless USB adaptor based on Wisair’s WSR601 single-chip solution, which follows on from the lead of Cable Unlimited.

The way it works is simple, and it is very similar to Cable Unlimited’s version. You simply plug one adaptor into your printer, hard-disk drive, digital camera, camcorder, or CD writer, and then plug the other one into your computer, and suddenly the two are magically communicating with each other without the need for a connection. On top of that, if you plug the dongle into a USB hub then you will instantly be able to transform it into a wireless USB hub.

This is all done via a “simple, standard Windows setup”, but we will have to wait to see just how simple it really is.

It supports WYSB 128-bit AES, but interestingly the wireless set claims to have a range of “up to 30 feet line of sight”, which sounds a bit dubious at this end.

But does this mean that wireless USB is going to be around for a lot longer? It’s difficult to say, now that WiQuest is no longer around. It certainly would not be a bad thing because it will make life just that little bit easier for those of us who find ourselves drowning in a sea of wires that seems to be getting worse on a daily basis.

If you want try it out and de-clutter your work station then you can pick up the device from Olidata for €59, which works out at about $75.
