Windows XP Requirements, What Do I Need To Use It

So let’s say you’ve dusted off your old PC, and it doesn’t have Windows XP on it. Most any PC out there today can handle XP no problem (and usually comes with XP or Vista pre-installed), but the older ones, you can’t always be sure.

So here are the specs you need to run Windows XP

Your PC has to have a 300MHz or higher processor clock speed. That’s recommended, but you only need 233 MHz to run it.

You’ll need 128 MB of RAM, or higher. You can also run it with as low as 64 MB of RAM, but the functions will be fairly limited.

1.5 GB of hard disk space.

A Super VGA 800×600 or higher video adapter and monitor.

A CD or DVD drive.

And, a keyboard and a mouse.

If you’re not sure whether or not your computer meets these requirements, you can do one of two things. Go into “My Computer” and see for yourself, or just try and install Windows XP and see if it works. If it doesn’t, the installer should tell you what the problem is, so you can address it.

To be honest, though, your PC probably can run Windows XP. Unless you’re using a Mac or a notebook or something, the vast majority of computers out there today and still in use are totally capable of running XP. The operating was designed for the computers that were in use in 2001, so it can run very easily on computers more than a decade old.

Today, Windows XP is, by a wide margin, the most popular operating system in the world, boasting a market share of 66.31%. The market share actually peaked in December 2006 at 85%. The slight decline can be attributed to a few things. Namely, new Windows operating systems being released, the increasing popularity of laptops which use downsized operating systems, and the increasing popularity of Apple computers.

The reason that the OS holds on, in the face of all this, is simply the fact that it’s a really solid, reliable operating system. Microsoft updates and adapts the operating system when need be, so you have Windows XP for laptops and notebooks, Tablet Windows XP for tablet PCs, Windows XP Media Center for media professionals and hobbyists, and so on. It’s versatile, powerful, and reliable, and the basic program can work on just about any modern PC.
