Will The Next Generation iPhone Kill Off The Netbook?

No, I doubt it, but if it lives up to expectations it is likely to shorten the gap between phone and computer by more than just a bit.

We’ve all been hearing the speculations and rumours about the next generation iPhone which is supposed to be out this coming summer. Apple have been keeping fairly quiet about their plans but we all now how easy it is for word to spread around the web the moment there’s a whiff of anything worth talking about.

So, why is there such a buzz of excitement around something that is little more than a phone that plays games? Ok maybe that’s a bit unfair, it is one of the best selling SmartPhones around.

Well that’s just it. It’s hard to imagine what the next generation iPhone could possibly do apart from faster processing and better gaming experiences, I mean so called SmartPhones are already pretty sophisticated as it is, unless of course the new iPhone crosses the boundary between phone and computer.

So what exactly are Apple are planning for the iPhone? If we take a look at the list of component suppliers for the new iPhone which was recently leaked and printed by Digitimes, we might think we could glean some information as to what the phone might be capable of.

Apparently Samsung will supply NAND flash chips and OmniVision a 3.2 megapixel CIS, and all the rest, but there’s nothing particularly outstanding or revealing to be honest. We want to know what the iPhone will actually be able to do and how will it benefit those who are using it.

There are indications that Samsung will provide a custom made system on a chip (SoC) which would certainly give the iPhone new hardware features and a unique edge over any competitors.

Apple of course also has the ever growing App Store which provides an outlet for creative developers and an abundance of entertainment applications for their customers.

Certainly Apple’s recent interests and investments would point to them increasing graphics and processing capabilities of the iPhone.

The question is how far will the iPhone go as a content creation tool as that is what will differentiate it from all the rest?

We know the iPhone will have a new operating system so combine this with new hardware and software capabilities, perhaps enhanced video recording and editing features, and what we’re starting to see is an iPhone that doubles as an ultraportable computer too.

If it is goes far enough, it could possibly even kick at least some existing devices into the realms of history. No joke.
