Will Dell’s Luxury Adamo Laptop Rival The MacBook Air?

We’ve been waiting for it for a while and now it’s finally here. Dell has launched their much hyped Adamo laptop which some folk say could even have the potential to kill off the MacBook Air, but I think we’ll just wait and see on that one.

The Adamo isn’t a run of the mill laptop. It is classed as a luxury laptop that might suit the well heeled and equally well dressed amongst us.

Yes it does look pretty elegant and it is slender and light, weighing in at around only 4 pounds. However, that just happens to be larger and heavier than the MacBook Air.

Dell have justified the size of the Adamo by indicating that they wanted to deliver performance and value and not just go all out to make something super thin. I can understand that.

On that note, the Adamo does have one obvious advantage over the MacBook Air as the Adamo also comes with an Ethernet Port, something that many Apple lovers would have liked to have seen on the MacBook Air but which wasn’t included.

So what sort of people will buy the Adamo? Apparently it isn’t aimed at just any old riff raff and is not aimed at the average buyer.

“It’s for an affluent crowd, and somebody who’s fashion forward, style conscious who wants to project an image of success and style. They probably have a fine watch, and nice, name-brand accessories, and we want this to be one of them,” said John New, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Dell.

The Adamo runs on a low power Intel Processor and supports DDR3 memory. The Adamo range includes128GB SSD, with Windows Vista Operating System, Wi-Fi and the option of external DVD-RW, Blu Ray drives and hard drives.

Battery life is ok at around 4 or 5 hours after being fully charged. Something that isn’t ideal though is that as the Adamo has an internal battery, when that needs replaced you will have to do without your Adamo whilst it goes back to Dell to have the new batteries inserted and how long that takes we don’t know.

Prices start at $1,199 for the low end which is not bad for a lappie that smacks of style but how well it will sell in the current economic climate when all of us are being forced to cut back and whether it will make any dent in Apple’s sales of the MacBook Air remains to be seen.
