Online retailer Amazon has just revealed what its Top 10 best-selling video games were over the past decade.
Right at the top of the list, in the No. 1 spot, we see not a game, but rather the Nintendo Wii console itself. OK so if the console is No. 1, you wouldn’t be wrong to think some Wii games are likely to feature high on the list, too.
• Second place: Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? (Nintendo DS). It may not be a Wii game, but it’s still Nintendo. It seems many folk were keen on improving their brain fitness.
• Third place: Mario Kart with Wii Wheel (Wii). Can never go wrong with racing games.
• Fourth: The Nintendo Wii Nunchuk Controller add-on. Motion sensor technology, FTW.
• Fifth: Wii Play with Wii Remote Controller. And again.
• Sixth: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2). Wait – not Nintendo? Not a shock, but still nice to see some one other than Nintendo has a spot on the list, no?
• Seventh: Wii Fit. The fitness game has become the new craze for young and old alike. Seems folk prefer to get fit in their own living rooms than venture outside to the gym.
• Eighth: Wii Controller (I sense a trend).
• Ninth: The Official Wii Wheel.
• Tenth: Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii).
Quite a feat, isn’t it, for Nintendo, to nab nine of the top ten spots? And some of them weren’t even games, but devices.
The Wii was released only 3 years ago and is still beating Sony’s Play Station 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox to claim the title as the world’s best selling games console. Why?
Personally, I think it’s because the Wii isn’t aimed specifically at hard-nosed gamers or even wannabe gamers. It’s also not just for the young (or young at heart). The Wii appeals to all ages and therefore the whole family can get involved — even grandparents.
In fact, doctors have been warning Wii’s middle-aged and older users to warm up first before embarking on a game of tennis. You don’t hear that with the PS3 or the Xbox do you?
It seems we all just love the Wii.
