These days it seems we have become obsessed with using technology to share just about every aspect of our lives with others, no matter how personal that info might be.
Social Networking has become the main if not the only way that some people keep up to date with what’s going on in the lives of others.
So how much are you willing to share with family and friends, and friends of friends, and even strangers tagging along at the end of a friends list?
Take your weight as an example. Would you be willing to update social networking sites with details about your weight losses and gains, and your body mass index (BMI) on a regular basis? Probably not!
Ok some might, more than likely those who are sleek and slender and proud to show off their vital statistics in this way. However, the theory is that if you were sharing this information with a load of others on a regular basis, it might just spur you on to fight the flab.
Now a company called Withings has developed a new gadget to help you on your way. A Wi-Fi enabled set of scales that will share that info for you.
When you step on it, the thing will record your weight and body mass index and tweet that info on to Twitter so that the entire population of Twitterverse can monitor your progress and failings, if you want it to.
“By default, the Twitter feature will not be activated when you purchase your scale … Only the users that enable this feature will benefit from the online peer motivation” said Withings.
I suppose the key point here is “Peer motivation”. Other diet clubs operate on much the same principle but on a massively smaller scale.
You go along to the weekly meetings, pay your fee and step on the scales. The embarrassment of having to admit to gaining a few pounds in front of the others is motivation enough for many people to encourage them to try harder the following week. Perhaps it will be the same on Twitter.
Just think, if you receive thousands of tweets congratulating you on losing the excess flab then that’s got to be good for the ego, however, what about those who are larger than life and gain even more. What sort of tweets are going to be posted back then?
Let me ask, who is going to want to share that sort of information. Personally I think it could all go horribly wrong.
