Why Being a Freelance Blogger Rocks

My main blog is about linkbait, how to write it, what it is, what is it useful for etc. The blog is used for a number of things:

  • Lead generation for my consultancy business
  • Building a brand within the online marketing space
  • Exploring topics through discourse
  • Venting some steam

I don’t make money from my blog, rather I make money with my blog. Let me explain. There are no adverts or other silly distractions, the focus is on the content, which is where I want it to be. The traffic is not high, probably a few hundred a day, although this can leap to many thousands due to a Stumble.

Being a freelance blogger has some great advantages:

  • You get to decide what goes on the blog
  • If the blog is successful you are rewarded
  • You get to work whenever you want
  • You get to work out of a cafe
  • You can take a break at anytime

Now there are negatives to these, but I’m not going to go there just yet, maybe in a later post. The point being that I absolutely love being a freelance blogger and earning my crust from something I love.

I meet great people, sometimes in real life even. I have made a good living from it and hope to continue. It strikes me that the geek with a laptop is becoming a larger and larger tribe. Working from home, telecommuting, it’s huge these days and only ever going to get bigger.

In the next few posts I am going to explore the world of the online freelance, or perma-lancer as I heard someone call it. It’s not about making stacks and stacks of money, it’s about doing something you love and being able to live a great life. Whatever that means to you.

So lets see where this journey will take us. I think it’s going to be an interesting one.

I agree but the challenge is finding a proper business plan. True, if you are concerned with quality of life over raw materialism pro-blogging can be a great option, but to a certain degree we/you/us are riding out a wave until the next great thing comes.

Perhaps that cynical of me? I just look at who survived the Web 1.0 shakedown–the companies who knew how to make money beyond just hype and an IPO.

I feel our current paradigm of disseminating information online (ie the era of close search algo’s) is fueling the money behind blogging. Content–> Organic Search –> Traffic –> Paid Search –> Revenue. Not every business model on the web works this way, but in a round about way I’m asking what’s next? And, yes, how will me monetize it?
