Who is Ireland’s biggest ‘Inner Geek’?

Microsoft plans to celebrate the launch of Windows 7 in Ireland by conducting a search for Ireland’s biggest ‘ geek jpg inner geek,’ who will then be awarded a state-of-the-art laptop, a whole host of other goodies and — of course — a copy of Windows 7.

The ultimate winner of the inner geek competition will be decided by a panel of judges and the prize will be awarded at a special party in Dublin.

Everyone who nominates someone and all who are nominated will be entered into a prize drawing and the first one drawn also will attend the special party scheduled to take place Oct. 21 to celebrate the launch of Windows 7.

So what sort of person qualifies as an “inner geek”? Basically, someone who likes gadgets and gizmos, probably texts or tweets or e-mails more than the average folk and doesn’t shy away from technology.

Geeks are not what they used to be you know — geeks these days are cool, really cool. They know how to do stuff and use words like LOL and OMG.

Joking aside, according to the Microsoft site, the person with an inner geek could be your mum, dad, sister, best friend, neighbour — maybe even you, so long as this person lives in Ireland.

Microsoft says people who are inner geeks might:
• Get their kids out of bed at an unearthly hour on Christmas morning just so they can play with the young’uns new gadgets.
• Have so many technology gadgets that in a power outage their entire house would literally stop working.
• Always have to have the latest and greatest MP3, mobile phone, computer game.
• Prefer to text or instant message you even though they sit beside you.
• Seem to know more people online than in the real world”.

Sounds like most of the people I know, actually.

Anyway, that’s beside the point. Why would Microsoft want to reward Ireland’s biggest geek?

Apparently they want to “publicly salute” the role ordinary people have played in the making of Windows 7.

To nominate someone, all you have to do is click on the link at the Microsoft Ireland site, enter the details of who you want to nominate and a little bit about why they should win and, of course, remember to put your own contact details there, too.

The competition closes at 6 p.m. Oct. 14.
