If you’re ever wondering how spam keeps getting through your filter when you just installed it yesterday, well, it has to do with a sort of endless cycle of evolution between the spam and the filter. Whenever a filter is updated, the spammers don’t take it lying down. Rather, they work over time to figure out how to create a new spam mail or address that will subvert the spam filter and sneak right by it.
So of course, when a new spam mail, address, or technique is discovered for slipping by the filter, the filter makers work over time to figure out how to block it. And, when this new strain of spam is blocked, the spammers have to come up with a way to subvert that, and so on and on.
So when we say “good email security software”, we’re not simply talking about one with a good user interface, one that’s easy to figure out or anything, though that’s part of it, but rather, we’re talking about filters that are always at least one step ahead of the spammers. Below, you’ll find a few good email security programs based on that one simple concept: They’re always kept up to date.
Probably one of the very best available email security programs out there is McAfee Security Center. More than simply blocking spam, McAfee can also kill viruses, stop pop up ads, identify worms and Trojans, and protect you from identity theft.
Simply put, McAfee is a full package for all of your computer security needs, with no parts missing. It’s easy to use, updates regularly, and may well be the only piece of computer security software you’ll ever need to download.
That said, it is fifty bucks for the whole package, so if you’re looking for something more in the range of somewhere between zero and zero dollars, eXpurgate might well be your best option.
eXpurgate is great because it’s simply just a really powerful little program. While free, it could easily compete with may of the pay-to-use spam blockers out there. By identifying both keywords and known spam sources, it can block around 98% of all spam.
It tends to get a little heavy on memory usage, though, but only if you’re having it sift through massive quantities of email at a time. As long as you’re careful with where you share your email address, you should be able to cut down on the amount of spam you’re getting in the first place, saving the program, and your RAM, a lot of time and effort.
