Toasted Cheese Sandwich

Rachael RayLately it seems to be all the rage on Food Network with people like Rachael Ray and her tasty 30 Minute Meals or on late night TV commercials with Ron Popeil and his “Set it and forget it” food processors to make a quick and easy meal.

The other day my friend Doug posted about bread and it reminded me of a fun food project that I documented a few weeks ago and forgot to post, so without any further delay, it’s time for project Toasted Cheese Sandwich, the perfect blogger meal.

I wanted to come up with something to share with my dedicated readers and fellow bloggers that had to do with food… hey we all get hungry and I know most of us don’t have a lot of free time on our hands, so I came up with a tasty sandwich that we could all make with little effort.

My yummy sandwhich can be made in 5 minutes or less with ingredients that most have already in hand.

What you’ll need is the following:

  1. Bread (Oroweat 100% Whole Wheat)
  2. Mayonnaise (Best Foods)
  3. Cheese (Kraft cheese slices)
  4. Toaster (Oster 2-Slice)
  5. Plate
  6. Butter Knife

Feel free to make substitutions as needed.

Sandwich Supplies

Ok, now we have all our supplies ready to go. The first step is to make sure your toaster is set to medium so we don’t burn the bread. My toaster is set to 4 which seems to work nicely. Now that the toaster is set, drop in two slices of bread:

Bread In Toaster

While the toast is being toasted I suggest opening the two slices of cheese to let them become room temperature which will help make them soft and ready for the upcoming steps.

After approximately 1-2 minutes, your bread will pop up from the toaster, nice and warm, ready for the next step which is to place a small amount of mayonnaise on the bread as seen below:

Toasted Bread

Ok, so now we have two slices of bread, toasted and warm with a light spread of mayonnaise ready for the next step.

While the bread is still warm, it’s time to place the cheese on the bread like so:

Cheese on Bread

Bam! Ok, fine I’ll pay Emeril Lagasse his nickel for using his catch saying. BAM! BAM! BAM! hehe!!

Hang in, we’re almost done. The last step is to place the two pieces of bread together, cut in half then eat:

Toasted Cheese Sandwich

Yes folks, a tasty toasted cheese sandwich is less then 5 minutes. It’s a pretty basic sandwich but again, the idea behind this is for people who are in a hurry and can’t spend 30 minutes or more to whip up a meal. It’s better then not eating at all.

Tasty! and it fits well in an Atkins phase 3 or 4 diet. And mayonnaise is perfect with it.

I can offer a nice drink to go with the toast.
    Take a big glass.
    Put sugar replacement in it.
Add about one fifth of unwhipped cream to it.
    Fill it up with milk.
Stir, don’t shake for Mr. Bond…
Put it in the microwave for 1 minute at 800W and… Voila!

The cream gives a richer taste.

Hi Fritz. Long time no see!

I didn’t even think about my toasted cheese sandwich being Atkins friendly. Thanks for pointing it out.

I’ll try your drink misxture later today. It sounds interesting.

  3. Wheat and dairy! What’s not to like!

Fast and healthy: 1 can tuna + some mayo on Triscuits (whole wheat and nice and salty).

Beverage of choice: TeaTech instant green tea.

  4. Sean Says:

Hi Andy. Glad you like it!

Triscuits are great. A little pizza sauce, some cheese, 30 seconds in the microwave and as Rachael Ray would say “yum-o!”

  5. Karen Says:

okay… I’d leave out the mayo and substitute for unsalted butter and sliced tomatoes sprinkled with freshly ground pepper… BAM! you get your vitamins too :D okay, so it takes you 3 minutes longer to slice up the tomatoes… that’s not that bad, is it?

  6. Sean Says:

    Hi Karen.

Adding tomatoes wouldn’t take any extra time as you could slice them up while the bread is toasting.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll add tomatoes next time around.

  7. I have to admit, Sean, it’s the perfect mix of great content and great showmanship! Bravo!!!

  9. A Little Love and A Whole Lot of Tips…

Since I didn’t party like a party animal on my Birthday on Monday (in bed with migraine), I thought I had better make up for all my losses. So this past Tuesday I went to a party, a cyber-party to celebrate 4 Successful Blogs’ first Blogday…

Now this is a good topic about Grilled Cheese. I continue to be amazed. :)

  11. Sean Says:

Ronalfy, glad you like it. Thanks for popping by my little place on the web.

  12. Jonathan Says:

Meh, mayonnaise on a grilled (or toasted) cheese sandwich? No thanks. Of course, I haven’t actually tried it, so…

I usually end up throwing mine altogether on an iron skillet with a little butter. Heat the skillet thoroughly, add a tablespoon of butter, and place the whole sandwich in the skillet. Let it sit for a bit to toast the bread, pick up the sandwich, add more butter if you like, and then do the other side. Poifect. :o )

We grew up on these mayonnaise grilled cheese sandwiches (with white bread instead) even though everyone in St. Louis thought it was weird. Apparently these are only popular in the South (e.g. Charleston, SC) where we moved from. And it has to be Hellmanns or Best Foods mayonnaise – Miracle Whip won’t cut it! – J.C.
