Have you ever read an interview with some rich movie producer, the founder of a Fortune 500 company, or some other wealthy tycoon?
Okay, when the interviewer asks “How did you get your start in this business?” what’s the usual answer? Maybe they inherited it from a parent, maybe they were simply born rich and could afford to go to an Ivy League School, or perhaps they simply lucked out on some business ventures and earned enough cash to start what would eventually become an empire.
It could be any number of things, but how often do you read this answer…
“I got an email from some guy in Pakistan saying he needed to put half a million dollars in my bank account! And when I sent him my PIN number and everything else he asked for, he totally did not use it to rob me blind! And then I took the money from that and put it into this business!”
Or what about this one (a personal favorite of mine, to be honest)…
“I got this great email about how I can make six figures a month working from home by selling questionable erectile dysfunction pills and hair restoration products online!”
No, that never happens in real life. In fact, it’s such a silly idea that it doesn’t even seem to happen too often in cartoons and comic books.
Spam is annoying. If somebody has a million dollar business proposal for you, they are most definitely not going to bother shooting off an email to a dozen random people they found online to see if they’re interested. There are no political refugees looking to stuff a half a million dollars into your bank account, sorry.
If you want some good, free antispam protection, you may want to give eXpurgate a try.
eXpurgate does an excellent job of identifying spam by two things; Database and keywords. It carries a huge database of known sources of spam, and kills them. And it knows all the keywords, as well as the disguised versions of those keywords, such as Vi@gra in place of Viagra.
It has a great, easy to use interface, too, assuring that you won’t get lost when trying to configure the thing.
There are some other good programs out there if you want to keep looking for the perfect spam filter, but chances are, you won’t ever wind up getting too much better than eXpurgate.
