Have you ever been anticipating that new game, maybe Left 4 Dead, Grand Theft Auto 4, Gears of War 2, and then it’s finally released, you get it out of the box, load it up on the drive home, because you just can’t wait (hopefully, you’re not the one driving!) and then your heart just sinks…
It’s running at about two frames per second, the graphics are loading up as plain polygons because your rig can’t handle the state of the art textures anymore, and you’re getting instantly booted from every online play session because you’re slowing everyone else’s game down with your crummy internet connection.
Well, the problem is easy to explain: Your laptop is getting old.
Sorry, but it happens. Just like with dogs, there comes a time where your beloved, trusted companion just can’t play and run like she used to.
Now, something you want to do is look at the system requirements for that game that you just can’t run at top speed. You might have any number of problems with your laptop. Maybe your graphics card is outdated, maybe your cable modem just isn’t cutting it and it’s time to go for an NVIDIA GeForce, or maybe you don’t have enough hard drive space…
But the number one problem always seems to be that you don’t have enough RAM. Today’s games are designed for computers that haven’t even been made yet! While regular ol’ out of the box specs on graphics and sound cards and so on will usually get the job done, very few laptops come out with enough RAM built in for the newest games.
Luckily, it’s not hard at all to get your hands on some good, cheap RAM for your laptop without spending too much money. If nothing else, this makes a heck of a lot more sense than putting your old laptop down for the count and picking up a new one for a couple thousand bucks.
What you want to do, first, is ask all your friends if they have any old laptops laying around that they never use anymore. You might be able to buy some memory off of them for cheap. After that, our advice is to simply browse online computer shops, auction sites, and electronics stores.
You’re probably going to be able to get a ton of RAM without spending hardly anything. Just make sure it’s compatible, and shop around, and your troubles should be over in no time.
