No, nobody actually has a reason to carry hundreds of thousands of records around on a laptop. My guess: the laptop was "stolen" to cover another crime -- selling hundreds of thousands of records to the RBN or someone.

The laptop then gets 'stolen' to explain how the RBN (or whoever) came into possession of said records.

It's funny; you can store the same number of records on a beefy USB drive. They're eminently more portable and "stealable," but you never hear about hundreds of thousands of records coming up missing because of a stolen USB. Why? Why would anyone bother to report a stolen thumb drive?

The laptop is perfect BECAUSE it is inventoried -- provides a perfect cover for the sale.

Note the common thread: LAPTOP
less computer, less secure and more costly.
importantly, they are easy to avoid!!
just say, "Make mine a desktop, please."
