The HP TouchSmart tm2t Has Landed

HPtouchsmart The HP TouchSmart tm2t Has LandedHP have just released the Touchsmart tm2t, a full-size convertible tablet PC which comes complete with touch input and dedicated pen.  The widespread proliferation of touchscreen technology may have become one of the biggest mobile computing tends of 2010, but does this attractive 12.1 inch laptop with Windows 7 live up to the hype.

HP initially announced the Touchsmart tm2t back in January, in a pre-iPad world where affordable mobile touchscreens were still a bit of a novelty.  A direct comparison is mute however, as the tm2t is a tablet laptop that is more capable than an iPad in most regards.  The tm2t comes with a Core i3 processor, switchable ATI graphics, a bright responsive touchscreen, and a rather lovely aluminium finish.

The tm2t is not only a nice looking design however, and features a screen that can be rotated in either direction for tablet functionality at a resolution of 1200 x 800.  There is no built-in accelorometer to switch the display however, and its erratic touchpad performance is disappointing in a computer of this class.  On the positive side, HP have decked out the tm2t with plenty of connectivity, including two USB ports, a memory card slot, VGA, and Ethernet.

The tm2t is likely to appeal to mobile computer users who want more power and functionality than an iPad type device can provide.  While the touchscreen abilities are great, this tablet PC is a good computer even without this capability.  With an OK processor, good graphics performance, a lovely design, and a touchscreen that is fun and intuitive to use, it is a shame that the touchpad lets the tm2t down so much.  The HP TouchSmart tm2t is available now, and can be customised from $849.99.
