The Best Spam Filtering: Exchange

exchangelogo1 The Best Spam Filtering: Exchange

Quick, name three or four great spam blockers!

That wasn’t so hard, was it?

Okay, now name three or four great spam blockers specifically designed to keep the junk out of your Microsoft Exchange account! Go ahead, we’ll give you a few minutes.

Give up yet? Yeah, there aren’t a lot of filters out there for Microsoft Exchange…

The thing is, everyone with a computer uses email, but not everybody uses Microsoft exchange. Especially when you consider that there are similar programs out there, such as Gmail documents. So while email spam filtering is a hot market, with literally every computer owner in the world being a potential customer, the same can’t be said with Microsoft Exchange, where a much smaller percentage of the population make for potential buyers.

There’s simply less consumer demand for a good Microsoft Exchange filter, therefore, it’s a less competitive market.

On the upside, this means you have a lot less junk to wade through before you find the good stuff. Or better yet, if you just keep reading, you don’t have to wade through any of the junk at all, because we already went ahead and found a couple of the best Microsoft Exchange spam filters available…

EMP

EMP uses all kinds of advanced techniques to pretty much serve as an impenetrable brick wall for nearly all spam coming at your Exchange account, and it also works for Domino and Groupwise. It is incredibly user friendly (they even offer to remotely login to your server and install the program for you). Even if you wind up going with the other option, at least give EMP a trial download and see if it works for you.

One of EMP’s proudest statements is that they’ve developed ways to get rid of cloaked spam. Cloaked spam is a type of spam that deliberately misspells or disguises spam keywords to sneak by your filter. For example, “FR33 Adu1t webs1tes!” isn’t going to be able to get past EMP, and neither will “Buy Viagrah online!”

SmartPOP

SmartPOP is a free, basic program for getting rid of the spam in your Exchange account It may be somewhat lacking in features when compared to EMP, but it is incredible to use, it’s effective, and it’s free. It blocks anywhere from 98% to 99% of all spam (and on a user to user basis, that means most of us get 100% of all spam blocked).
