The Best Anti Spam Filter for Linux Users

Linux is kind of the litmus test to discover if somebody is really, truly, a real red blooded geek or not.

Now, it doesn’t count if you have Linux just because you got this computer off of a friend and they had Linux. You have to have gone very far out of your way to go and get yourself a copy of Linux just because it’s such a great operating system that Windows and Mac OSX actually make your eyes hurt!

So if you’re reading this on a Linux OS, good job, you are a true blue credit to the team.

Now let’s talk about what you did wrong…

Windows is simply the most compatible operating system in the world, what are you crazy?!

But seriously, while Windows does seem to get all of the good stuff first, Linux does get great stuff eventually. A lot of it is homebrew, and a lot of it comes a year or longer after Windows gets it, but we get it sooner or later.

The problem is that Microsoft really hit the nail on the head in the early nineties. When the home computer boom hit, they were right there. Windows, then, pretty much can’t help but be the number one operating system across the world (even if Vista suxorz), and of course, that’s the operating system that developers are going to flock to.

So anyway, enough with the introductory paragraphs already! Here’s what you came for: The best antispam for Linux.

SpamAssassin

The thing about Spam Assassin is that it’s actually an open source program. So while it was designed with Windows in mind, it’s been adapted by a number of users to fit any other operating system you can think of.

It deserves its name, as it certainly does kill viruses without hesitation or remorse. It works on one of the biggest databases of known sources of spam, and it uses the Baynesian filter process to cut down on the ones it doesn’t already have. It uses keywords, disguised keywords, and stuff that sounds like it kinda might be keywords to identify obvious spam tricks.

To put it simply, SpamAssassin might well be the only spam killer you need for Linux. It’s effective, and incredibly easy to use thanks to a remarkably simplified interface. One cool thing about it is that, since it’s open source, you may be able to download plugins made by the community surrounding the program to improve your experience… You probably won’t need to, since it’s nearly perfect as is, but who knows?
