The Beginner’s Guide to Spam Filtering

expurgate The Beginners Guide to Spam Filtering

You don’t want spam in your inbox, simple as that. So what do you do about it?

Well, first of all, get yourself a spam filter.

If you want the very best protection available, you’ll want to spend a few bucks on a full package for protection against spam, as well as adware, malware, viruses, Trojans, and worms. One of the best options around for full protection against internet predators is McAfee. The only problem is that, at fifty dollars for the full package, a lot of people are reluctant to pay that price when there are plenty of good filters around to keep spam out of your inbox.

So what you’ll want to do is look around for a free antispam program. Now when it comes to free spam filters, you’ve got as many options as you could possibly want… more than you could possibly want, in fact. So many that it’s actually gotten kind of hard to keep track of!

So you can either download every single one and try them all out until you find one you’re happy with, one that keeps all the spam out of your inbox, or… you can simply read the following…

As far as we can tell, these are two of the best free spam filters around.

eXpurgate

eXpurgate has two things going for it that have made it a pretty popular choice amongst people looking to stop spam dead in its tracks. First, it’s very easy to use. It allows you to configure it to your own settings, but without requiring a degree in computer sciences. Second, it works against both spam and viruses, and it’s surprisingly powerful on both fronts, drawing from a pretty wide, regularly updated database of known viruses and known sources of spam.

POPfile

POPfile is maybe your best bet if you’re just looking for a simple, no frills, easy to use spam filter. It stops about 98% of spam (and for most users, that number is closer to 100% on an individual basis), and it’s a simple process of apply it, and forget about it. You don’t need to maintain, configure, or muck around with POPfile, it just gets the job done.

Now, while either of these programs will do a great job killing spam, you’ll probably want something a little more to protect yourself from adware, malware, and viruses, so couple one of these up with a great virus scanner, and you should be good to go.
