T-Mobile Unveils Second Android SmartPhone

T-Mobile has revealed more about its second SmartPhone running with Google’s open source Android operating system.

The myTouch G3 follows on from the successful launch of the T-Mobile G1 last year and although it’s an improved version it is also pricier.

The first thing about the myTouch is that it is essentially the same phone as the HTC Magic except that with the myTouch you have many options to customise your phone to reflect your own personal style and taste.

“There’s a no cookie-cutter approach” said Chief Marketing Officer for T-Mobile USA Denny Marie Post.

What T-Mobile are trying to do is give you a phone that you can make “uniquely yours” so you can even personalise the case, which isn’t usually an option when you buy a new phone.

The phone also comes with Sherpa software by Geodelic and features GENIE (Geodelic Engine for Interest Evaluation) an application that “learns” from your behaviour and automatically customises your phone based on your behaviour.

Basically it gets to know your likes and dislikes through experience and feedback so is able to offer recommendations and suggestions for retailers, restaurants, sites, and other things that might interest you.

As for the specs, the myTouch comes with a 3.2 inch HVGA touch screen, a 3.2 megapixel camera, music player, enhanced video features, pre-installed 4GB microSD memory card, and for connectivity options we have Wi-Fi and 3G.

The virtual keyboard is definitely a nice touch on the myTouch and gets rid of the physical keyboard that we had on the G1.

You also of course have access to other third-party applications via the Android OS and also many of Google’s services including one click upload to the likes of YouTube and Picasa.

The biggest competition to the myTouch is likely to come from the Apple 3G, particularly where storage is concerned. The myTouch is yours for around $199 for a two year contract which puts it in the same price category as the latest Apple 3GS and the Palm Pre but even with the old 8GB Apple 3G you would get twice the storage for half the price.

The myTouch will be available to existing T-Mobile customers on the 8th July and everyone else will have to wait until August.

Over 1 million Apple 3GS phones were sold within 3 days of its launch so let’s see if the myTouch 3G has the same impact on the buyers.
