The thing about spyware is that… it’s everywhere these days. Everyone has to deal with it. Simply put, if you have a computer, whether it’s a laptop, a notebook, a desktop, or a ten year old Packard Bell, you’re going to have to either disconnect your internet, or you’re going to have to deal with spyware sooner or later.

The real problem with spyware is that it’s not just a malevolent piece of code. Sure, adware and viruses can really wreck havoc on your computer. They can slow you down, they make you deal with spam and pop ups, but… that’s pretty much it.

Spyware, on the other hand, is a serious threat to your livelihood. With spyware, a hacker can crack into your computer and effectively do whatever they want through remote access.

So of course, there’s a lot of demand for good spyware products to kill this stuff off. The problem therein is that there are dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens of anti spyware products out there, so… which one do you choose?

Well, we can’t tell you which one you’ll like best (because if I was psychic, I wouldn’t be writing about computers for a living!), but we can make a few suggestions.

Avast! Home Edition

Avast is one of the most popular pieces of anti spyware and antivirus software out there, and for good reason… it’s free!

Okay but seriously. It’s free, yes, but it’s also a darn good program. It receives regular updates to its already massive database of known viruses, it’s easy to use, and it works, very well.

McAfee Security Center

McAfee does an excellent job of covering you on every possible front when it comes to computer security. It kills spyware, but it also kills viruses and spam, adware and malware, popups, Trojans, and worms.

It’s just as easy to use as Avast, though it offers a bit more in the way of configuration and options. Reviewers tend to appreciate the relatively simple interface.

AVGFree

AVGFree will stop anything we list under the name “virus”, be it a piece of adware or spyware, AVG will get it. It is designed to be a very simple, easy to use program. The trade off is that you get very little in the way of configuration and options with the program, but if you just want to install a program and stop worrying about it, look no further.
