You ever get one of those spam mails from the foreign dignitary who needs your bank account information so he can give you millions of dollars for no reason at all?
What I like to do is send them a quick email back “This is great! I’ve been living on my friend’s couch and I’m twenty grand in debt after my small business went down! What do I need to do?”
I never seem to get a response after that.
Sometimes spam mail can be pretty funny, like ads for Viagra written by someone who barely speaks English, but even in spite of a good laugh now and then, nobody really likes spam. Some of us dno’t have to worry about it, while some of us seem to get everyone else’s share.
We’ve devised a very simple way to determine whether or not you need a spam blocker.
Step one- Check your email every day over the course of a week.
Step two- If you get any spam, you’re going to need a spam blocker.
Luckily, a lot of free email providers are pretty good about killing spam. Gmail, for instance, almost never gets spam if you know what you’re doing and you’re careful about who you share your email address with. AOL, likewise, can be pretty good (though that wasn’t always the case). We won’t say anything about hotmail or MSN, because we don’t want them to be angry with us.
Another issue, beyond email, is what if you use a program like Microsoft Exchange? Without a spam filter, you’re probably going to get a pretty heavy influx of unwanted junk emails and documents.
Anyway, if you get spam, you need a spam blocker, and if you don’t, you don’t, simple as that.
Our advice is to go ahead and shop around for a good, cheap spam blocker, but until you get one that you’re happy with, you should protect yourself in the meantime with one of the many free spam blockers available. POPFile is a good one for general email purposes, and SmartPOPExchange gets the job done for MS Exchange.
And, of course, always remember to be careful with who you share your email address with. Even if you have the best spam blocker in the world, it’s always best to try and help out, cutting down on the amount of memory your spam blocker needs to use to get the job done by simply not throwing your email around all over the message boards.
