LG dials up the Fifties with CRT TV

koreantv LG dials up the Fifties with CRT TVWould you pay $215 for a black-and-white CRT TV — with knobs?

LG is betting that some customers in its native South Korea will. The new Retro Classic dives back into the silver age of television to offer something different and daringly unexpected: a 14-inch cathode-ray-tube display that can convert even the newest programming into glorious black-and-white at the touch of a button.

Speaking of buttons, the thing even has knobs, for that truly old-school interface. (Don’t worry — there’s a wireless remote. They’re not stupid.)

Rabbit ears? Check. Detachable legs? Why not!

Maybe there’s a retro-chic fad sweeping the plucky little republic at the moment. Perhaps they’re itching to bring back the fabulous ’50s — because that decade was so much fun for the peninsula. Maybe they’ve just snapped under the constant fear of Lil’ Kim’s suspicious affinity for model rocketry on a grand scale, or decided to have some fun.

Whatever the reason, the TV has a digital tuner and composite video ports, so it won’t be just a novelty or a doorstop. But you have to buy it in South Korea, at least for the time being: No global release has been announced.

Will the rest of the world go back to the future? Don’t touch that dial!
