Sony have just updated the Vaio Z, the already very respectable 13.1 inch ultra-portable laptop. As you probably know already, this is a very nice laptop indeed, but with so many ultra-portables hitting the shelves in recent months, does the Vaio Z still have enough to keep the competition at bay.
The Vaio Z certainly looks like a Sony model, with a sleek appearance and a fairly good build quality. It is not a rugged model however, and the design team at Sony have definitely gone for light and thin over strong and durable. Saying that, the Vaio Z is well built and should be strong enough for the everyday needs of most users.
The Sony Vaio Z can be configured, and now supports the latest Intel Core i5 and Intel Core i7 processors. Up to 8GB of RAM is supported, and Windows 7 is the operating system of choice. Switchable graphics is also supported, with Nvidia GeForce GT 330M and 1GB of dedicated video RAM being paired with the Intel GMA HD.
The Vaio Z is incredible thin and light, with a weight that measures a tiny 3.04 pounds and dimensions of only 12,4″ x 8.3″ x 1.3″. When you realise that the screen size is only 13.1 inches in size, the display resolution of 1600 x 900 becomes very impressive indeed. This resolution can be improved even more however, with the option of a 1090P panel with a 1920 x 1080 display.
As well as offering a better screen resolution that all of its ultra-portable competition, the Vaio Z also looks better than most other panels on the market. It is clear, sharp, and vivid, and has a better contrast than much bigger laptops. For a highly portable laptop, it is very hard to find anything negative to say about the Sony Vaio Z as a multimedia solution.
The keyboard is a standard Sony chiclet design with LED backlighting, and the touchpad supports some multitouch features. Connectivity is mostly what you would expect from such a high end laptop, although it is slightly disappointing that the new USB 3.0 standard is still not supported.
With a laptop of this quality, you know it is not going to be cheap, and this is still the biggest stumbling block for most consumers. The Sony Vaio Z can be yours for between $1919 and $2899, and – if you can afford it – is worth every penny.
