Some Company Mergers I’d Like To See In 2007

The Web is buzzing with the news that Microsoft has restarted acquisition talks with Yahoo but if you’re talking about mega-tech-mergers, I can think of a bunch of hook-ups which make a lot more sense.

1. Apple Buys Sun. The world’s most innovative personal computing company gains some of the world’s best software developers, plus captive source of microprocessors.

As an added bonus, see the iPhone support Javascript. See Mac OS X become open sourced. See Jonathan Schwartz and Steve Jobs do the industry’s coolest good Web cop, bad Web cop routine.

2. HP Buys Dell. No economies of scale but you’d sure have one heck of a big company. Dell would get heavy duty engineering and lots of printers. HP would get to do a Compaq-type deal again and get it right this time.

3. Best Buy acquires Radio Shack. For consumers, the benefit is clear: Buy a wide-screen TV, get free batteries and they don’t even ask you for your phone number anymore.

4. Texas Instruments Buys Texas Rangers. They could name their baseball field “Texas Stadium” without the usual criticisms.

So what do you think? Would the above mergers work in your eyes?

    I like the Texas idea.

I’m tired of ridiculously named pavilions, arenas, and stadiums.

I was recently at snagajob pavilion. Ugh!
Better than PSInet Stadium, now M&T Bank Stadium.

I’m all for combining the two into MT PSInet Arena!

    But I digress…

I’m seriously curious with what Apple and Google have up their sleeves. You don’t have a chief Googler sitting on your board for no reason. And what’s with all the cryptic talk during the iPhone announcement about things to come. What is their plan?!

I really think the Apple + Sun merger would work quite well. Sun’s dedication to Free Software and Apple’s endless pit of innovation might mix nicely.
