Some folk are raving about it, others find it hilarious and there are those who haven’t even heard about it yet but one thing’s certain, the laptop steering wheel desk is causing quite a stir.
Basically the AutoExec WM-01 Wheelmate as it is called is a tray that you can attach to your steering wheel on which you can easily write or use it for holding your drinks or snacks when taking a break from driving. Well that’s what they say anyway.
However, in case you hadn’t noticed, the wheel mate also happens to double up very nicely as a perfect platform for a laptop or a netbook, and apparently people are going mad for it according to the reviews it has been getting round the web.
The laptop steering wheel desk has actually been around for several years but it hasn’t really caught on until now, and I’ve got no idea why, it’s like folk have gone insane.
It’s being dubbed the laptop steering wheel desk but of course you cannot possibly use a laptop whilst at the wheel and Amazon.com, which has the device for sale on their site, recommends that “For safety reasons, never use this product while driving” but we know that don’t we.
How many times have we been told not to text or use our mobile phones when driving? Enough said.
If you have your laptop on your tray and yet at the same time both hands on the steering wheel, then you are of course also hands free, and technically would be able to watch the latest news streams, keep an eye on your social networking site updates, check the odd email, and continue driving at the same time.
Now obviously this is not a good idea just in case it happened to cross your mind.
What’s really amazing about this gadget though is the number of other uses people have apparently found for it.
One reviewer on the Amazon site said he uses it to prop up his music so he can play the guitar. Another uses it to twitter at every road market, and yet another apparently uses it as a mini bar.
One commenter would like to see a two shelf model so they can install their Xbox 360 and play modern warfare 2 too.
If nothing else the laptop steering wheel desk, which has been hailed as “the greatest thing ever invented” by one happy reviewer, has given us all a laugh.

Having your eyes towards the wheel is not towards the road. This will cause so many accidents. OMFG. Is this review for real? Nobody thinks this is a good idea!!! They are joking. what stir?? It’s not even for sale on amazon two people are selling used ones. It is the worst idea, you’d have to be stopped to use it and I doubt it could hold the weight of a netbook. many uses? you should have included the guy who used it as a bed for his dog until it was ejected out the window during a left turn. or how about the creative use involving a reviewers midget girlfriend?
“Hilarious” is not the word that comes to mind after I see this. There is absolutely nothing funny about people who take this seriously and think it is a good idea. One, there is something seriously wrong with you if you need to be at your laptop while driving, Two, THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. People don’t need anymore distractions while driving.
This actually is a great invention. Not only can I use my laptop while driving to a claim, when my wife uses it she can change junior’s diaper as well as breast feeding him while the little tyke is safely balanced on the desk. This way she can save time while going home from daycare and get right to supper when she gets home. I think I will make a slight modification of this suspended over the boiling pan so she can feed him there while boiling some chicken. What a great idea.
I like it and will definitely use one for my laptop during the morning commute!! I’m concerned about punching my screen if I have to slam on the horn, though. You know, like when some moron cuts me off because he’s talking on a cell phone.

Apparently, you guys have never had to work in your car. I used to drive a tow truck and most of my time of writing (or typing) up receipts was spent while sitting behind the wheel while I was parked. I set up a small console between the seats but it was painful on my back to be twisted around like that for any length of time. This would have been the perfect tool to use back then, especially since laptops were much bulkier back then. i would have paid top dollar for a good attachment like this to make typing and writing better. I think anyone who would purchase this would know full well not to use it while driving.

Ha! A mini bar? Yes, that goes great with my glove box wine cooler and the kegerator in the trunk. What open container, officer? The wine cooler and kegerator are LOCKED!
The AutoExec WM-01 Wheelmate positions the laptop screen at a very low level, so it catches sunlight on the screen making the resultant glare a major interference in viewing the screen. You’d have to turn the brightness up all the way (draining battery) if you hope to see anything. In addition, you have to look way down in an unnatural bent-neck position. Also, unless you have skinny thighs, it is easy to accidentally bump the Wheelmate and it comes off the wheel. I gave up on using it after a while due to neck spasm and eye strain. I am very pleased with the PowerDesk (see http://ingenious.com/PD/pd.htm) which allows neutral body position, straight-ahead viewing of the screen and custom tilt adjustment. It is a GREAT product and I highly recommended!
