The new generation of laptops are small, light and ultra thin which means we can take them and our work with us wherever we go. Of course we also want them to have most if not all the features of a standard laptop. So what’s available?
World’s smallest laptop
Let’s see what are the contenders for the world’s smallest laptop in August 2008.
Asus Eee PC 900A
This ultra portable notebook comes with an Intel Atom processor as opposed to the Celeron in earlier models. With only an 8.9 inch display, it is small and very light and just happens to be inexpensive too. However, it doesn’t have a lot of storage compared to other models on the market and it doesn’t come with windows pre-installed.
Lifebook P7010
This one by Fujitsu Siemens has a 10.6 inch widescreen so although it can’t exactly be considered the smallest in the world as there are smaller notebooks around; it is worth a mention if we want a laptop that is compact, has a good keyboard and has a long battery life.
World’s thinnest laptop
Presenting the world’s thinnest laptops.
The MacBook Air
This notebook from Apple is only 0.16 inches thin and can easily fit inside a manila envelope so could arguably take the number one slot for the world’s thinnest laptop. It also has an LED backlit display and full keyboard with multi touch gestures and can even claim to be eco friendly with mercury free display, an aluminium case that is recyclable, and arsenic free glass.
Intel mobile Metro notebook
Intel have come up with this fashionable model which is less than 0.7 inches thin and can do everything a standard computer can do including connect to all kinds of wireless networks and it only weighs 2.25 pounds. Don’t rush out to buy it yet though as it’s still at the prototype stage.
World’s lightest laptop
The weight of the laptop is crucial for users that like to carry the laptop always with them. Let’s see what are the lightest laptops available.
Portege R500
At only 779g this model by the Japanese company Toshiba is certainly in the running for the world’s lightest laptop even if it isn’t the smallest. However, it is one of the first one to incorporate a trans-reflective LED backlight LCD for inside and outdoor use and the first to come with a 64GB SSD.
Thinkpad X301
Lenovo are due to launch this laptop at the end of August 2008. Weighing in at less than 3 pounds and only an inch thin, it is easily transportable and has the added bonus of the latest DDR3 memory and an ultra low volt processor. Lenovo also claim that it gives nearly 20% better performance than its predecessor, the X300.
