Ever since the rise in popularity for home computers, we’ve also seen a huge rise in popularity for, of course, tech support services.
For many, this is great news. By making a quick call to a tech support hotline, you can take care of a confusing issue in a matter of minutes. However, don’t get suckered into hiring a service you don’t really need.
When it comes to spam filtering, you really shouldn’t have to do anything more than buy a piece of spamkilling software you like, install it, and then just sit back and read your email.
The fact is, while these services can be incredibly helpful if your computer is really giving you trouble, they can also be a little on the pricy side. If it turns out that what you needed them to do was something you could’ve easily figured out on your own, you’re only going to wind up feeling gypped.
So here’s a basic guide to downloading a spam filter for yourself and installing it…
Step one, go ahead and download it
We like POPFile as far as free spam filters go. eXpurgate is another good one, but the choice is yours. Go ahead and download one of them, or another of your choice. POPFile and eXpurgate are all you need, but if you’d rather try something else, it’s easy enough for Google to turn up dozens of choices for you.
Step two, installation
This will be a self explanatory process. As soon as you double click on the icon, the installer should lead you through it. Most spam filters will install themselves and update themselves without you needing to lift a finger.
Step three, configuration
This is the part that some people hate. Luckily, POPFile and eXpurgate are both incredibly easy to configure. Just click and unclick some boxes, and that’s that.
This all sounds so simple and basic that you might be a little insulted that we’re even bothering to spell it out for you. We’re just pointing out how easy it is to block spam on your own. The Geek Squad may be who you’re gonna call if you have to deal with a fried modem or some such, but spam blocking is the easiest thing in the world. Don’t waste your money on hiring a spam filtering service. The free spam filters out there are easy to use and get the job done just as well as any professional help can.
