Imagine taking home your brand new iMac, opening it up, only to find that the thing is damaged or worse, it won’t even work! That’s the scenario currently facing many customers who have just taken possession of their new 27” iMac.
Numerous complaints have started appearing on Apple forums across the internet and customers are anything but happy.
It seems that some users cannot even get their brand new iMac to boot up, others find their machine starts to boot up but never quite gets there, and many are reporting that the glass is cracked on the bottom left hand corner of the display.
When it comes down to it, the iMacs just haven’t been doing too well have they! It’s less than a month back that reports were surfacing of other problems such as slow Flash playback, a faulty snow Leopard installation and a bug that caused the hard drive to spin down.
Engadget, the technology weblog and podcast site for consumer electronics have something to say about the iMac issues and they should know, they happened to be one of the unlucky ones that got a dodgy machine.
“Apple’s new Core i7-based iMac might be a performance monster, but it looks like the whole family’s having some problems getting out of the gate: in addition to the previously-noted performance issues with the Core 2 Duo models, a quick glance across Apple’s support forums and on other Mac boards around the web reveals that some machines are showing up DOA and / or with cracked screens” Engadget say on their site.
“We’re a little more familiar with the DOA issue, since the new i7 we just bought doesn’t boot at all, but the cracked screen issue seems to be equally common and mostly affecting the bottom left corner, from what we can tell” Engadget continues.
With these latest problems the word on the street is that the damage has most likely been caused by packaging that is flawed in some way.
Ok so that might explain the cracked LCD screen but what about the boot up problems, could that be connected to the new Intel chip? Who knows!
So far Apple hasn’t uttered a word.
As the holiday shopping season is about to start, if you were planning one of these for yourself or as a gift then I would hold off a bit until the issues are resolved.
