UK start up company PsiXpda founded by an ex Psion employee is about to launch a new pocket Netbook and when we say pocket Netbook we mean just that, this thing really is small enough to fit inside a pocket although it is powerful enough to make it worth a look.
Measuring just 174 x 84 x 25 mm and weighing in at only 430 grams, this is the ultimate in portable computing devices.
The Netbook has a dinky 5 inch TFT LCD touch screen with a resolution of 800 x 480. It runs on an Intel Atom 1.1GHz Z510 processor, it has 1GB RAM, 16GB SSD, 32 MB display memory and features Windows XP Home operating system.
For those who want a different operating system, PsiXpda have stated that they will be releasing drivers and updates.
Of course there are the usual connectivity options such as Bluetooth, WI-FI (b/g) and 3G options which include WCDMA, EVDO or TD-SCDMA.
Other features include a 64 key backlit QWERTY keyboard with built in track pad and mouse buttons on the screen’s bezel , full size and mini USB port, VGA webcam, Micro SD card support, High Definition audio, internal speaker and microphone, 2.5mm headset socket, and an 1850mAh battery.
Given that this is a Netbook, designed for portability, then we’re going to want to take it out and about with us but it looks like we’ll only get around two hours usage, four if we’re lucky, before we have to charge the thing up again.
The new PsiXpda pocket computer looks set to be one of the smallest and lightest pocket computers in the world. I suppose what it really offers are computer functionality with easy portability in one tiny form factor. Appealing or not?
In Taiwan this type of thing is very popular but as to whether it will have the same appeal elsewhere there’s no way of telling until it hits the streets.
Now we get down to price. The PsiXpda is expected to go on sale in the UK with a price tag of around £500 and is expected to be shipped worldwide.
£500 is pretty high for a Netbook so it will be interesting to see if it takes off and if it does, who’s buying it.
If you want one then according to the PsiXpda website they will be “opening orders for the PsiXpda in the very near future”.
