PS3 PS3 to go 3D by next month

PlayStation 3 users who have been waiting patiently for 3D capability to come to their console will be happy to know that from next month they will be able to watch 3D movies and play 3D games.

The news came directly from the mouth of Howard Stringer during a press conference at the IFA show in Berlin. Incidentally, Sony’s presentation was in 3D.

Stringer said that the 3D software upgrade was now complete and that it will be ready to roll by October although he didn’t go as far as to give an exact date which is a bit disappointing.

PlayStation 3 gamers have been waiting for 3D Blu-ray ever since Sony announced it at the beginning of the year and thought they were going to get it this month but it was delayed.

Stringer didn’t give any reason why it was delayed but never mind another month won’t really make any difference as there’s not much you can do with it at the moment anyway.

Sony is desperate to be at the forefront of 3D technology and is keen to see us all embrace 3D with a passion. Stringer said that with 3D Blue-Ray capability, the PlayStation 3 will encourage greater adoption of 3D.

That may a logical conclusion as there are nearly 40 million consoles in households around the globe but users will still need to have a 3D capable television to watch the movies and play games, oh and don’t forget the 3D specs either.

Another important consideration is content or more to the point, lack of it. At the moment you can only hope for a handful of 3D films and games to choose from.

Regarding game titles available soon Stringer mentioned Mortal Kombat, Killzone 3, and Motor Storm Apocalypse. Big movie titles on their way include Michael Jackson’s ‘This is It’, Avatar, Spiderman 3, Alice in Wonderland and Green Hornet.

Fortunately, Sony also provides content so there should be more 3D availability sooner rather than later.

In other Sony news, Stringer said the company would be releasing a Sony 3D home projector, the WV-90, which will be available in Europe in November and a 3D compatible laptop by next year sporting a 3D button and active-shutter glasses.

Sony also plans to launch its own 3D TV channel with a variety of programmes to appeal to the whole family.
