In this day and age, it really is a good idea to have a nice laptop. Even if you’re not obsessed with playing all the latest games or anything, even if you don’t need it for multimedia purposes, a nice, capable, up to date laptop can be a real life saver. From finding directions online when on a road trip, making reservations, and staying in touch wherever you are, to just plain checking your emails and having something to do when you go to the coffee shop, the convenience of a nice laptop cannot be overstated.

But then, have you seen the prices on some of these laptops? Try getting something new and top-of-the-line with less than one or two thousand to spend on it.

Luckily, you do have a few options for getting a great laptop on the cheap. You can try waiting for sales (though let’s be honest, laptops on sale are usually on sale for a reason: They’re not selling at full price!), or, you look into reconditioned laptops.

The great thing about reconditioned laptops is that they’re usually being sold off by users who don’t know just what a great thing they have on their hands. They’ve just upgraded to some fancy, shiny new Alienware rig, when they never even realized that they could simply add a few new components and have their “beat up old laptop” running as excellently as any out-of-the-box gaming or multimedia rig out there.

Reconditioned laptops usually begin in rough shape. The “reconditioner” will replace damaged or missing components and sell the unit off as being “gently used”. They’re usually a great starting point for anyone looking to buy a cheap, simple rig, and then upgrade it and update it into something they can be truly happy with.

Upgrading may sound like a bit of work, but think of it this way: You can get the four hundred dollar reconditioned laptop and spend one or two hundred on some new components so that, for a total of around six hundred bucks, you’ve got the equivalent of a twelve hundred dollar rig… or you can just spend twelve hundred dollars.

Just… be careful who you buy from. Sometimes, a reconditioned laptop is more like “a junker”, or just a totally bricked laptop with a fried motherboard and a dead hard drive. You should only buy through a source that you can hold legally accountable if you get totally gypped. Beyond that, reconditioned laptops are an excellent option for saving, perhaps, several hundred bucks on a great computer.
