New Sharp Netbook Has Touch Screen Trackpad

Netbook after Netbook after Netbook, they’re coming out in droves, week after week, month after month, it seems everyone is producing a new Netbook these days, all with the same specs and features and characteristics, maybe with a few quite minor variations here and there. What we want now is something different and that may be exactly what Sharp is giving us here.

Ok so the new Japanese Sharp Netbook the Mebius PC NJ70A has a standard set of specs when it comes down to it, a 10.1” display with a resolution of 1,024 x 600, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB Hard Drive, three USB ports, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, Ethernet, Multicard reader, nothing much to write home about there.

However wait a minute, it also sports an 854 x 480 4” LCD touch screen track pad. Yes that’s right, a touch screen display pad. Now that might have got your attention but if it didn’t it certainly got mine. At least it makes the latest Netbook to appear on the scene a tad more interesting than the rest, for the moment anyway.

The touch screen is situated right where the track pad would normally be and is a fully functional touch screen that acts as a secondary display and will even adjust its brightness depending on the available light.

You can adjust an equalizer with it, operate the mouse and it also functions as an application launcher and can play videos. You can also write emails with it using either your finger, if your finger is small enough of course, or a stylus. Pretty impressive eh!

Who knows if it will take off and we’ll start to see this as a feature in more new Netbooks, for the moment we’ll have to hang back and see on that one.

I suppose if nothing else Sharp can claim to have produced the first ever Netbook with a 4” optical sensor LCD with LED backlight touch screen pad.

Yes it’s an interesting feature; however, is it worth the extra cash? We don’t have an exact price for this new Netbook as yet but rumours are that it will be on sale for around $817. That’s a fair bit to pay for a Netbook that is otherwise a pretty standard machine.

It will be available in Japan of course towards the end of May.
