Apple has unveiled some of the new features we can expect in the new iPhone operating system which will be launched later on in the year and it’s looking good. The first to get the update will be the iPhone and iPod touch and then the iPad a bit later.

At Apple’s Californian headquarters, Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple demonstrated the multitasking feature which will allow users to use more than one app at the same time.

At the moment the iPhone will allow users to simultaneously open certain apps created by Apple but the new OS means users will be able to truly multitask by being able to use several apps created by external developers at the same time, something that other SmartPhones can already do.

Apple haven’t done it yet apparently because they have been trying to find a way to allow multitasking that won’t slow down the iPhone or use up too much battery juice.

“We weren’t the first to this party but we’re going to be the best” said Jobs.

Other features in the new OS will include the ability to gather all your emails from multiple accounts into one unified inbox, a gaming platform called Game Centre that allows you to challenge friends, Apple Bookshop, and iBooks.

Jobs also revealed details of iAd, a mobile advertising system where adverts will appear directly within applications created by third party developers.

“We think most of this mobile advertising really sucks and we think we might be able to make some contributions” said Jobs.

The revenue from the iAd will be split 60/40 with 60 percent going to the developers and Apple keeping 40 percent.

Three months ago Apple bought Quattro for $300 million and as Quattro is a wireless mobile advertising network it’s not really a surprise to learn that Apple are moving into mobile advertising.

They originally wanted AdMob but Google had already grabbed it, and according to Jobs it was only because Google didn’t want Apple to have it.

Anyway, to sum up, with the new OS the iPhone basically becomes an all in one communications device, gaming gadget and even an eReader. Cool!
