Yesterday Apple revealed details of their new iPhone 3GS handset at the World Wide Developer Conference in San Francisco and then today O2 announced that the new Apple iPhone will be available in the UK from the 19th of this month.
So what is worth talking about with the latest offering from Apple? Well the rumours of double the memory of previous versions of the iPhone have proved to be true. There will be a new 32GB phone and a 16GB model and a faster processor. The 8GB model will still be available but at a reduced cost of £61.00.
If you’re wondering about cost of the new iPhones, as I’m sure you are, then brace yourself because the new iPhones are anything but cheap.
Disappointingly 02 have also said they will not be subsidizing the cost of upgrading to these phones so if you want one then you’ll have to pay to terminate your existing contract before subscribing to a new one.
This decision has infuriated many existing and potential O2 customers who are venting their frustration and anger around the Net.
Basically if you subscribe to the highest tariff with O2, which will cost you £73.41 a month for an 18 month contract and £44.05 for a 2 year contract then you can have the 16GB 3GS handset for free.
If you want to go for the 32GB 3GS handset then you will only get it free if you opt in for a 2 year contract at £73.41 a month which is pretty hefty.
Those only wanting to commit themselves to 18 months on a lower tariff of £29.38 a month will have to pay £184.98 for the 16GB model and £274.23 for the 32GB model.
There’s always the option of Pay as you Go too and if that’s what you want it will cost you £440.40 for the 16GB and £538.30 for the 32GB.
There are also additional costs involved if you want to opt in to the new iPhone operating system 3.0 feature which enables users to use the phone as a 3G modem for a laptop, as you will need to purchase a ‘tethering bolt on’ which will set you back a further £15 a month with a 3GB cap or £29.36 a month with a 10GB cap.
At least there’s something for free, the new iPhone operating system will be available as a free download for existing iPhone users through iTunes from the 17th June, two days before the new handsets become available and that will give existing iPhone users more features to play with.
