MSI X-Slim 340 Ultra Thin Laptop And The Wind U100 Netbook

When we talk about the thinnest of thinnest of laptops most of us will no doubt conjure up an image of Apple’s MacBook Air.

However, now the Taiwan based company Micro Star International or MSI have launched their own ultra thin laptop which they’ve called the X-Slim 340, and at first glance it looks just as thin as the MacBook Air, well at the thickest point it does.

If thin is your thing then the truth is that the X-Slim 340 is only one millimetre thicker than the MacBook Air at the thickest point and a measly 2 millimetres thicker at the thinnest point but tell me, who’s going to measure?

The X-Slim 340 is powered by Intel’s new ultra low power processor chip the Intel Core 2 solo processor and is one of the first laptops to carry that chip, which of course means the X-Slim 340 will be pretty energy efficient.

It comes with a 13 inch screen which is not quite as large as the standard laptops and yet bigger than the usual Netbooks so will be appealing to those who value portability but want a larger viewing screen as well as the functionality of a full blown laptop.

You can choose from a 4 cell battery which will give you a reasonable 7 hours battery life, or there is apparently an 8 cell battery available.

There’s the option of having an external Blu-ray disc drive or a DVD SuperMulti Drive which of course you can slot into one of the connector points which are located on the thickest part of the laptop which measures only 20 millimetres.

The MacBook Air by the way measures only 19 millimetres at its thickest point so I can’t help but wonder why they didn’t just go the whole hog and slice another millimetre off but never mind.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth and the option of adding WiMax modules.

MSI are also launching a new Netbook, what a surprise! The Wind U100 Plus carries the Intel Atom N280 processor as opposed to the N270, has Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system, a 10 inch screen with a 600 x 1024 resolution, 160 GB Hard Drive, a 3 or a 6 cell battery, and of course Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Unfortunately at the moment we haven’t been able to establish what the X-Slim 340 or the Wind U100 Plus is likely to cost.
