Time has revealed their top ten gadgets for 2009 and this year the number one spot has been given to the Android based Droid SmartPhone.
“Everybody likes Android, Google’s open source SmartPhone operating system” says the entry in Time.
“The Droid is a hefty beast, a metal behemoth without the gloss and finish of the iPhone, but you don’t miss it” the entry continues.
“The Droid’s touch-screen is phenomenally sharp and vivid. It has an actual physical (not great but good enough) keyboard, and best of all, the Droid is on Verizon’s best-of-breed 3G Network”.
Incidentally Verizon has just released a tough talking video ad which appears to compare the Droid to Apple’s iPhone suggesting that the Droid is a more macho alternative.
The ad doesn’t mention the iPhone specifically but seems to be calling the iPhone a princess.
“Should a phone be pretty? Should it be a tiara-wearing, digitally clueless beauty pageant queen?” the commercial says.
The ad then describes the Droid as fast “racehorse duct-taped to a scud missile fast”, a phone that can “rip through the Web like a circular saw through a ripe banana”.
“Is it a precious porcelain figurine of a phone? In truth no. It’s not a princess – it’s a robot. A phone that trades hairdo for can-do”.
The Droid, which has been touted as an iPhone killer, along with a load of other phones of course, went on sale in the US earlier this year and was given highly favourable reviews, and has only just launched in the UK.
The Motorola Droid has a 3.7 inch touch screen, 32GB memory, a slide out QWERTY keyboard and a five megapixel camera. However, the beauty of it running on Android 2.0 is that the phone can also be used as a Sat Nav so no need for another gadget.
Other winners in the Time top ten gadgets list include the eBook reader Nook in second place and the Dyson Air Multiplier Fan in third.
Last year you might remember it was the iPhone that topped Time’s list; this year however, it only managed to make it to 4th place.
The other gadgets that make up the rest of the ten are the Dell Adamo XPS in fifth place followed by FinPix Real 3D W1 camera from Fuji, G-Shock GW7900B-1 watch from Casio, Beats Solo Headphones, and in tenth place the Panasonic G10 plasma screen television.
