The Modulus is a new Eco Friendly , sustainable laptop design by up and coming industrial designer Ed Boaden and if first impressions can be relied upon, which isn’t always the case, the Modulus does have something going for it.

What makes this particular laptop quite special and in fact appealing in a juvenile sort of way, is the ease with which you can assemble and disassemble the various parts using the snap fittings so I guess that means you can put your tool bag away.

The Modulus opens in such a way that facilitates better air flow under the laptop helping to keep it cool. The hinged design also enables you to just lift up the cover so access to the internal components is not a problem either.

The design also makes repairs easier and more cost effective. If something goes wrong you don’t have to replace the whole thing, or send it back lock stock and barrel to the manufacturer and wait impatiently for its return; you just replace the individual component. What could be easier than that?

It also comes with a map of all the components and full instructions for the removal of the all the parts. This of course means that anyone using the machine can carry out any of the repairs, within reason of course.

As for working it, I like the cool hand rest feature which apparently will make it more comfortable to type and anything that will help stave off RSI is going to go down well with those who work long hours.

A nice but completely irrelevant touch is the different coloured caps available to go on top of the snap fittings so you can colour co ordinate your workforce, match your company colours or even choose one to go with your outfit. Ok so maybe that’s taking it too far but the choice is there.

According to the designer the Modulus will be ideal for using in places like schools, libraries and offices.

It’s pretty green too. With thin client computers most of the processing is done on a central server so there is less energy consumption. Also, Replacement parts are sent in postage paid returnable packages so you can send all broken and unwanted bits back to be recycled or re-used.

If you’re interested the Modulus will be on display at the Lakeside Arts Centre University Park Nottingham UK  from the 30th May until the 2nd June.
