Mobile Phone Advertising Starting To Make Headway

We’ve been hearing about it for years now, the fact that mobile phones could potentially offer amazing opportunities for advertisers, not just because the ads can be seen by many but also because the ads can be location based.

Think about it for a moment. A computer store in some corner of the country isn’t going to get far if their advert appears as just one amongst millions across the globe, but when that ad is viewed locally, that’s a different story.

Now, at last, mobile phone advertising finally seems to be getting off the ground, partly it has to be said, because more and more people are buying SmartPhones which can access the web and a significant amount of content.

Business executives at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona said that the introduction of SmartPhones has given a big boost to advertising as surfing the web is something that practically all of us are doing on a daily basis.

And this brings us to another important reason why mobile ads are on the rise, in only 2 years mobile internet access is likely to be the most common way that people access the internet, even more common than on the PC.

Ok so there are bound to be hassles to overcome, that’s par for the course. For example, users getting used to seeing adverts on their screens and even how to display them. But what if any progress has been made?

According to reports, Christian Louca, UK manager of mobile advertising agency YOC told Reuters that the mobile industry had now moved beyond the trial phase and was starting to see dedicated budgets for mobile.

And according to Thomas Schulz, Managing Director of AdMob, “People are waking up to the mobile Internet and getting more used to good advertising.”

I suppose the key word here is “good” advertising, which in my book anyway, means targeted advertising. We want to see what is of interest to us or there’s no point.

Ok so don’t hold your breath as we’re maybe some way off yet and according to Eden Zoller, analyst at Ovum “there’s still a lot of work to be done” but no one is actually denying the huge potential of mobile phone advertising.

I’m all for it. Of course it makes sense for advertisers to reach their target audiences via the mobile. Let’s be crystal clear about this; it’s got to be good for business.
