The world of Wi-Fi has practically changed overnight thanks to a joint venture by two companies from Finland, Joikusoft and DNA. The news that has just come out is that DNA subscribers can now download the Joikusoft software to their mobile phones, which will allow users to turn their handsets into personal Wi-Fi Hotspots.
It sounds incredible, but apparently it’s quite simple. Essentially it consists of a simple application which, once downloaded by DNA subscribers onto their phones, suddenly transforms their mobile handsets into wireless broadband hubs, from which they can then connect up their laptops, digital cameras, and iPods to the Internet.
There has been quite a battle being fought between WiFi and mobile broadband recently, but this move seems to combine the two into one device. It is the first time that such a scheme has been released anywhere in the world, and DNA customers are set to be the first to benefit from a wireless broadband service to their mobile phones.
Once the user has downloaded Joikosoft to their mobile phone, they can simply switch the Wi-Fi on at the click of a button. DNA also has a high-speed mobile data plan, meaning users can benefit from speeds of up to 2Mbps. And on top of that, the WiFi is not limited to one device, but can be shared with other users.
But users do not have to worry about who can connect to their WiFi hotspot through their phone. Instead, they get full control over access, so if they want to then they can just let their friends connect without the fear of other people coming along and taking advantage of it. This is due to the Symbian OS platform which forms part of the security system.
And Timo Varsila, the head of DNA’s product department, has stated that “We want to offer our mobile customers an easy way to access mobile broadband wherever they are, simply by using their mobile phone as an internet gateway.”
Will it catch on? Probably. This really does mark a significant shift in the way that we access the Internet, and I would not be surprised if in the near future we are all using our mobile phones in this way. As long as they can keep the prices down, who knows how big this could become.
