Earlier today Midway Games Inc. announced that new versions in their Blitz football and Mortal Kombat fighting game series will be released in the first quarter of 2008.
The news comes at the tail end of a press release announcing lowered financial results due to the delay of the PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 and less-than-expected sales of BlackSite: Area 51.
The news is clearly meant to keep investors confident that Midway will continue to leverage its major properties in 2008; for us, we can just wait for official announcements in the “near future,” according to Midway president David Zucker in the release.

I don’t know why you’re posting all these modern video game press releases (if they were retro games, I’d understand (though Mortal Kombat probably qualifies as retro by this point…)), but since this is the second week in a row I’ll be using them for school assignments, I say you should keep them coming.
Hey Luke. I do like retro games (see my MAME section) and that’s the reason why I posted about both the company Midway and also Mortal Kombat.
Midway produced some of my favorite classic games, Pac-Man, Galaga, Tron, etc.
Mortal Kombat is of course a little newer but I still consider it a classic, just like Street Fighter.
Tell me more about your report on gaming. It sounds interesting.
Not a whole lot to tell about the assignment, really. Each week everyone in my marketing class has to pick a current event to bring in to class and discuss the marketing aspects. Last week I did mine on industry whipping boy Activision doing the impossible and reuniting an idolized band after thirty years; this week it’s Midway attempting some damage control to keep investors from jumping ship.
Good point on Midway being an old arcade company. Something about that did niggle at the back of my consciousness when I was writing that previous comment, but mostly I was thinking about how Mortal Kombat used to be good…
