Microsoft announced yesterday that along with several other vendors it has launched SQL Server Fast Track Data Warehouse which combines SQL server with data warehousing and parallel processing software.

What this means for companies is that instead of struggling to create and deploy their own enterprise class data warehousing projects, companies will be able to have immediate access to pre tested industry standard hardware from the likes of Dell, Bull and HP, who plan to offer systems based on the new platform, which is scaleable up to 32 terabytes and with prices starting at only $13,000 per terabyte for the hardware.

Microsoft is also planning to add more vendors in future but at the moment they have named only these three.

The new SQL Server Fast Track Data Warehouse is expected to save companies a lot of time, effort and money and enable more companies to exploit the benefits of data warehousing.

According to Mike Gill, Vice President of Industry Standard Servers at HP “For organizations to be competitive in today’s global marketplace, they need affordable, easy-to-deploy technology solutions that are powerful and secure,” and “Industry-leading HP ProLiant servers running the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Fast Track Data Warehouse bring the benefits of data warehousing to a broader customer base than ever before.”

Microsoft has also partnered with systems integrators Avanade, Cognizant, HP and Hitachi to help customers create customised solution templates that have been specially tailored for the new reference architectures.

“In this difficult economic climate, organizations relying on their data to inform critical business decisions need an enterprise data platform that provides access to huge volumes of data at a low cost,” said Stuart Frost, General Manager at Microsoft SQL Server Data Warehousing “With SQL Server Fast Track Data Warehouse, we are offering customers choices in reference configurations and technical guidance to create a customized, highly scalable enterprise-class data warehouse solution that fits their needs and their budget.”

The SQL Server Fast Track Data Warehouse is only the beginning, in future customers who sign up for the new reference structures today will be able to make a seamless transition to “Madison”, a Microsoft project that will enable companies to deploy data warehouses into the hundreds of terabytes.
