Microsoft announced today that users of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 can make use of a new environmental sustainability dashboard (ESD) which is designed to gather data on their business’s carbon footprint and help them identify ways to reduce their energy costs and save money at the same time. And guess what? It’s free!
Yes, you read right, for no additional cost the dashboard will record the sort of information required to measure the four key environmental performance indicators as identified by the Global Reporting Initiative for energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, including direct on-premise fuel consumption and the carbon footprint of their power usage with utilities and other vendors.
The innovate RoleTailored design gives employees their own personalised role centre which is customised with information related to their job. The dashboard will also act as an environmental manager and will allow businesses to track their energy usage and identify ways to cut their energy consumption which of course will reduce their carbon footprint and lower their costs at the same time. Impressive stuff!
“Businesses will find new opportunities for cost savings and improving operational performance by getting a fresh perspective on their operations,” said Kirill Tatarinov, corporate vice president, Microsoft Business Solutions.
Of course it’s not always possible or even financially feasible for some smaller to medium sized companies to keep a dedicated environmental consultant on the payroll month after month to monitor energy consumption, but by the looks of things, they can now fill that role for free with the environmental sustainability dashboard.
We are constantly hearing about how important it is to reduce our carbon footprint, not just as individuals but in business too. Companies are coming under increasing pressure to go greener, not just because of tighter regulations imposed on them from above, but also by supply chains and consumers who are demanding more eco friendly practices from those they choose to deal with.
One of the biggest challenges facing forward thinking eco buniesses today who really do want to foster a greener image and reduce their impact on the planet is how to go about gathering and tracking environmental data related to their every day business practices so that they can identify where they can cut costs and implement the necessary changes required.
It would appear that this new dashboard could provide them with a means to do just that.
