Anyone who has a Netbook and who wants to install Windows 7 is going to have a bit of a challenge, mainly because Netbooks don’t have optical drives. Well it was a challenge until now that is.
No doubt responding to pressure, Microsoft have released the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool which will enable users to download Windows 7 from the Microsoft site and create a bootable DVD or USB drive to install it on their Netbooks.

Here is what Microsoft Store US says.
“If you’ve got a netbook, you probably don’t have a CD or DVD drive – so you may be wondering how you can upgrade to Windows 7.” That’s right, we are.
“We’ve got your answer” says Microsoft.
“The Microsoft Store is the only place where you can get a downloadable version of Windows 7…Download Windows 7 directly onto a USB drive on your netbook – no CD or DVD drive necessary – and start taking advantage of the best Windows yet.”
Microsoft then goes on to explain why they believe that Windows 7 is the right operating system for your Netbook.
“Improved design, better interaction with your devices, and easier switching between programs are just some of the reasons why Windows 7 is the operating system that will make your netbook shine”
Netbook users can then choose whether to download Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade, Windows 7 Professional Upgrade or Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade.
Interesting turnaround though don’t you think? Initially, Microsoft intended the Windows 7 starter edition to be used on Netbooks, looks like they’ve changed their mind.
The starter version also doesn’t have some of the features available on the full version and you cannot upgrade to the starter version, it will come preloaded onto new netbooks.
Anyway, after you’ve downloaded whichever version you want you can then boot from the USB drive and start your installation. Sounds easy in theory, but to get it to boot from the USB drive you need to change the BIOS which could prove a little bit too techie for beginners.
Before you get too excited about the prospect of upgrading your Netbook via a USB drive, it only applies to those in the US.
“This option is available in the US, but we have nothing to officially announce in the UK at this stage,” a Microsoft spokesman told PC Pro.
So, if you were planning to download it from the UK Microsoft Store you can basically forget it for the time being.
