Microsoft’s Laptop Hunters Ad Campaign – is it working?

If you haven’t seen any of Microsoft’s laptop hunters Ads yet, which are basically in response to Apple’s “Get a Mac” Ad campaign, it’s worth checking them out.

The Ads all follow the same template and at some point bash Apple. What we have are various shoppers who are on the lookout for a new laptop, the shoppers give their budget and what they are looking for and Microsoft offers to pay for it.

“You find it, you keep it” each of the Ads say.

One shows mum Lisa with 11 year old son Jackson looking for a laptop for under $1500 which has “speed, a big hard drive” and would be good for games.

“Let’s go see the Macs, they’re kinda popular at this age,” says mom Lisa before adding but “these are way more money,” then referring to a white MacBook young Jackson comments that they are “a little bit too small”.

“Maybe we’d rather go PC” he says and off they go to have a look.

What do they buy? A PC of course! In this ad it’s a $900 16 inch Sony VAIO with Blu-Ray and by the looks of things they get to keep the change.

The rest of the ads follow the same kind of format but with different shoppers and laptops. At no point is Windows openly mentioned.

The point is, are the Ads working?

Well if the aim is to get up Apple’s nose then yes they are. Apparently, Lawyers acting on behalf of Apple called Kevin Turner; Microsoft’s Chief Operating Officer and asked for the Ads to be removed.

Turner was telling the story at the Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans and in his own words according to Microsoft’s official transcript, here’s what he had to say.

“And you know why I know they’re working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey — this is a true story — saying, “Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices.” They took like $100 off or something. It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I’ve ever taken in business” (Applause.).

Apparently, according to a report in AdAge, since the Ads have been on the go Microsoft’s value perception is on the rise whereas Apple’s has fallen.

Hey, what a difference an Ad makes.
