Michael Moore’s latest film Sicko

Michael MooreMichael Moore’s latest film Sicko has appeared online.

I watched it in its entirety on Google Video last night.

It has been removed since then, though it’s no doubt still available on various file sharing networks.

I’m tempted to send Mr. Moore a check for the $20.00 USD I won’t be spending at the movie theater this summer but to do so would be to shortchange him.

Sicko is a profoundly compelling film and if it has the effect on the rest of America that it had on me, Mr. Moore will have done this country a far greater service than can be paid back in dollars.

Whether you lean right or left or off the charts, you will be moved by the grotesque inequity in the U.S health system that Mr. Moore documents.

You may not agree with Mr. Moore’s argument that the U.S. should nationalize health care. You may not agree with the rhetorical techniques he uses to make his points. You may find his personal politics contrary to yours.

However, if you see Sicko, I suspect you will find it hard to deny that the U.S. heath-care system needs to change.

Writing about the unauthorized release of Sicko, The New York Times said, “Moore, 53, has been vocal in his support of downloading pirated movies as long as movie pirates don’t profit.”

If only the health care industry shared Mr. Moore’s willingness to think of something other than profit, fewer U.S. citizens would die for the sake of some insurance executive’s bonus.

You spend $20.00 in a movie theater? Heresy! What about at the matinee?

  2. Sean Says:

    Hi Dylan.

On average, movie tickets range between $7.00 – $13.00 USD per person for a movie ticket even if you go to an early show.

How I came up with $20.00 was tickets for two as I usually go to the movies with my lady or a friend.

  3. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing Sicko. All the snippets I’ve seen online have been great, and I’ve heard nothing but great reviews so far – even from FOX News!

Like you say Sean, no matter what your political beliefs are, it’s difficult to ignore the sad state of our health care system.

  4. I have known about the movie from my colleagues in American Cancer Society. I endorese the view that the “health should be nationalized”, only in US but globally.

In India and other devloping countries, being ~20-40 years behind the progress in provisions for health, we are moving downhill.

The government sector is unable to deliver health uniformly to the most deprived; It is being privatized rapidly with insurance sector vying for its share, biting through the pocket of the majority shockingly; and, sadly the people in these ‘developing economies’ will realize after another 40 years to think pursuing their governments to nationalize health through another ‘Moore phenomemnon’.

I am hopeful that there will be ways to minimize this gap to benefit the billions and help improve the Health globally through this current effort of Mr. Moore.

While I look forward to the release of movie in India, having read its reviews, my admiration for the genius of Mr. Moore has grown further to suggest highest of the civilian recognitions which can be given to such a person with admirable courage, brilliant mind and above all, a golden heart.
