There’s a new space invader type game everyone’s talking about but unless your relationship with your laptop has reached critical point then I can’t imagine you would want to play it as the costs are pretty high.
No you don’t have to fork out a fortune to install it, it’s free in fact, and you can download it from stfj dot net. However, by playing the game you risk losing valuable files on your laptop. Really!
“Lose/Lose is a video-game with real life consequences. Each alien in the game is created based on a random file on the player’s computer. If the player kills the alien, the file it is based on is deleted. If the player’s ship is destroyed, the application itself is deleted” says the website.
Yes you read that correctly, if you happen to shoot an alien in the game then you have effectively blasted one of your files to oblivion, and there’s no way of knowing which one.
Just to reinforce the point, the website also displays a warning in large alarm bell ringing red text which reads “KILLING ALIENS IN LOSE/LOSE WILL DELETE FILES ON YOUR HARDDRIVE PERMANANTLY”.
This brings into question the whole nature of the game itself and why on earth you would ever choose to play it, unless you’re some kind of freak, or it’s on someone else’s computer of course.
“Although touching aliens will cause the player to lose the game, and killing aliens awards points, the aliens will never actually fire at the player.”
Let me get this right then, we have friendly aliens that won’t do us any harm but if we kill them we gain points but risk the files on our laptop, any files. Am I missing something here?
“This calls into question the player’s mission, which is never explicitly stated, only hinted at through classic game mechanics. Is the player supposed to be an aggressor? Or merely an observer, traversing through a dangerous land?” we are told.
“Why do we assume that because we are given a weapon and awarded for using it, that doing so is right?” the developers ask.
“By way of exploring what it means to kill in a video-game, Lose/Lose broaches bigger questions. As technology grows, our understanding of it diminishes, yet, at the same time, it becomes increasingly important in our lives. At what point does our virtual data become as important to us as physical possessions?”
Thought provoking stuff!
Download it if you dare.
