LG Electronics, the third largest mobile phone producer in the world, are about to launch a beta version of an online application store to enhance the experience of their mobile users. The focus initially will be on Asia.
It is expected that around 24 countries will finally be able to access the service once it is rolled out to the rest of the world sometime later this year.
Around 1400 applications will be available to start with along with at least 100 programmes completely free for LG mobile users, which will be available in a total of 15 different languages but by the end of this year LG say they will be increasing the number of applications to around 2000.
“As we’ve announced earlier, LG is planning to invest heavily in the SmartPhone market going forward, with ten SmartPhones being introduced this year alone” said Dr. Skott Ahn, CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.
“As the trend has shown, the appeal of SmartPhones is in the diversity and usefulness of the applications. Opening our own Application Store will allow us to offer the best content and applications for our devices so that LG phone owners will get the best possible ownership experience.”
“It’s important to understand that unlike other mobile phone manufacturers, LG’s Application Store is not intended to be a new or separate business model,” added Dr. Ahn.
“It’s an added-value service that comes with LG’s high-end phone and SmartPhone ownership. And unlike other mobile phone online stores, LG’s intention is not to censor the type of applications that are available to our customers but only to ensure that they meet the high standards for quality and compatibility.”
Yep, all the software will be tested first to make sure it’s completely “bug free”.
The first countries in line to sample the delights of LG’s new app store and will be able to do so from 14th July include Singapore, Malaysia and Australia whereas Europe and South America will have to wait till later on in the year.
Notably absent on that list is the United States. Apparently LG haven’t made any firm plans to offer the service in the US, which just happens to be the home of the incredibly successful Apple’s App Store which currently offers somewhere around 50,000 applications.
Elsewhere, we don’t have any time scale for when the Beta version of LG’s application store will end.
