We’ve got to laugh haven’t we! Ok so we know there’s a bit of a battle going on between Psion Teklogix, Intel and Dell regarding the use of the name Netbook but who cares, we still use the term which has become part of our daily vocabulary.
Well now LG Electronics have unveiled their latest ‘Netbook’ the new X120 Ultra portable PC and have decided to market it as the LG X120 Whatchamacallit. Now that’s funny.
No doubt LG will have the last laugh as the new Netbook is bound to attract a lot of attention just for its name alone and with so many netbooks to choose from and a new one appearing every week it seems, anything that highlights one particular Netbook is bound to result in a few extra sales.
Seriously though, LG are looking for a name for the X120 and have a competition on the LG Canada website where you can go and suggest one. You can also look at recent entries and give them the thumbs up or down.
Suggestions so far include names like ‘George’, ‘Minilap’, ‘Lightgo Total’ and ‘LGBreezer’ as well as hundreds of others. The winner chosen by LG will receive a free X120 Whatchamacallit and can have a story line to boast about at parties for years to come – they were the one that named the Whatchamacallit.
“We want to create consumer interest and get ideas” said Shawn Snobelen, director of sales for LG Canada’s IT and commercial sales division. “It will be going to market as the X120, but we’ll be looking for a pet name to go along with it for later in Q2 when the (naming) contest ends on June 10″
Ok we’ve had a bit of fun but what about the Netbook itself, is it any good? Well yes actually we wrote about it the other day. The X120 happens to be a powerful little Netbook that is suitable for anyone; it’s easy to use, functional, and ultra-portable and that’s what Netbooks are all about.
“We’re realizing the ultra portable space isn’t owned by one particular (customer) demographic,” Snobelen said. “X120 is an application-based product for the consumer who wants something ultra portable, a small form factor and functionality.”
It also looks pretty cool too. “The X120 has a completely new chassis and design with new feature sets and a new screen,” said Snobelen.
Future Shop is going to be the first retailer to stock the X120 as early as next week and prices start at around $550.
I don’t know about you but I just can’t wait to see what winning name they pick, roll on June 10th.
