3D technology has been the new thing ever since the blockbuster movie “Avatar” was released last year. Now an increasing number of companies are keen to get in on the action and produce 3D televisions, gadgets, and computers and of course 3D content to go with them.
Korean based LG Electronics who also happen to be the world’s second largest TV manufacturer, is right behind 3D, so much so that they are now going to push 3D laptops and computers as well as their 3D TVs.
Acer, Asus, Toshiba and Samsung have already produced 3D laptops and to add to the list we now have LG’s first 3D laptop which will be available in Korea this month and hopefully the rest of the world towards the end of August.
The LG R590 3D comes with a 15.6 inch display and runs on Intel’s Core i7 HM55 chipset. You also get NVIDIA GeForce GT335M graphics, and 1GB DDR3 Video Memory and the option of a Blu-ray drive.
Also included is TriDef software which will convert 2D video into 3D in real time. Of course you also get the necessary 3D polarized specs along with it. Prices start at around 1.6 million Korean won which equates to around $1,330.
So bearing in mind that 3D television sets have been around for a while now but they haven’t yet become common in people’s homes, will 3D laptops actually take off?
Those in the know reckon there are 2 main obstacles to the uptake of 3D en-masse. One is that the technology to enable 3D viewing is expensive and the other reason is the obvious lack of 3D content such as films, programmes, games etc. but availability is now rapidly increasing so this won’t always be a problem.
LG believe that 3D really will take off and have announced that they pan to sell around one million 3D television sets this year but they also want to increase shipments of 3D capable laptops by 30 percent next year and predict an increase of sales from 1.1 million units to 13.8 million units in the next five years.
LG are also releasing a 3D gaming monitor for games enthusiasts who want to enjoy playing with a 3D experience and a full HD 3D projector which comes with six pairs of polarized glasses for family viewing.
