Lenovo launches the cool looking Thinkpad Twist

POSTED BY David Allen IN Laptops ON 23 Oct 2012

With powerful laptops and tablets becoming more popular every day, its seems only natural that designers should come up with something that crosses over into both sectors and this exactly where the Lenovo’s new Thinkpad Twist will fit. This machine has the appearance of a cool looking laptop, but with the flick of the wrist, it all of a sudden becomes a tablet computer with touch screen operation and running the latest Windows 8 operating system from Microsoft.

As with all computers available from big firms such as Lenovo, there is an entry level for the Thinkpad Twist, but then there are the options and upgrades, which not only produce a more powerful machine, there is a price to pay. We will look at the base unit as this gives us a good grounding on what Lenovo are offering here. Starting with the display there is a 12.5 inch screen with LED Backlit and LCD capacitive multi-touch technology offering a 1366 X 768 of pixel resolutions and there is a built in 1.3 mega pixel web camera too.

To go with the touch screen display it is running on the new Windows 8 operating system and powered by the Intel Core (Ivy Bridge) i5-3317U processor with a 1700 Mhz CPU speed and support from the Intel HD 4000 Graphics card. There is just 4096 MB of RAM available and there is a 500 GB hard disk drive (HDD) available for storage purposes. Networking uses the normal Ethernet 10/100/1000 LAN, Bluetooth 4.0 connection and there is an 802.11 a/b/g wireless LAN.

Other features include a useful mini display port, mini HDMI out, SD card slot and a couple of super fast connecting USB 3.0 ports. This is a small and neat machine that measures up at 12.3 inches (312 mm) (W) x 9.3 inches (236 mm) (D) x 0.8 inches (20 mm) (H) and it weighs in at just 55.3 oz (1569 grams) with the 48 (Wh) battery pack installed that Lenovo say will be good for between five to six hours of power. Lenovo have priced the Thinkpad Twist competitively with a starting price of around $900, but it could end up a lot higher with options and upgrades.
